Synopsis/Plot
The Phantom of the Opera is a 2004 romantic drama film based on the 1986 musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which in turn is based on the 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux. The film follows the story of a disfigured musical genius known as the Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House. When he falls in love with the beautiful soprano Christine Daaé, he devises a plan to make her the greatest singer in the world and win her heart. However, complications arise when Christine’s childhood friend and suitor Raoul enters the picture and the Phantom’s dark secrets are revealed.
The film stars Gerard Butler as the Phantom, Emmy Rossum as Christine, and Patrick Wilson as Raoul. It also features Minnie Driver as Carlotta Giudicelli, Miranda Richardson as Madame Giry, and Ciarán Hinds as Firmin Richard. Directed by Joel Schumacher, the film features lavish production design, lavish costumes, and a sweeping score.
