The Personal History of David Copperfield is a 2019 British comedy-drama film directed by Armando Iannucci, based on the Charles Dickens novel of the same name.
The film follows the titular character, David Copperfield (Dev Patel), from his birth in the early 19th century to adulthood. As a young boy, David is sent to live with his cruel stepfather, Mr. Murdstone (Darren Boyd), and his loving but overbearing mother (Morfydd Clark). He finds solace in his friendship with a kind housekeeper, Peggotty (Daisy May Cooper).
When David is sent away to a boarding school, he meets his lifelong friend James Steerforth (Aneurin Barnard). He also meets the eccentric Mr. Micawber (Peter Capaldi) and his family, who take David in as their own.
As a young adult, David struggles to make his way in London. He meets the wealthy and mysterious Uriah Heep (Ben Whishaw) and falls in love with the beautiful Dora Spenlow (Rosalind Eleazar). He also meets the kind Mr. Wickfield (Benedict Wong) and his daughter Agnes (Morfydd Clark).
