Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Palm Beach Story”
The Palm Beach Story is a 1942 romantic comedy film directed by Preston Sturges. The film stars Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea as a married couple, Gerry and Tom Jeffers, who are struggling to make ends meet. When Gerry finds out that Tom has been using their money to invest in a failing business, she decides to leave him and seek her fortune in Palm Beach.
When Gerry arrives in Palm Beach, she meets the eccentric millionaire John D. Hackensacker III (Rudy Vallee), who falls in love with her. Gerry manages to convince Hackensacker to finance Tom’s business, and she and Hackensacker become engaged. Meanwhile, Tom has followed Gerry to Palm Beach in order to win her back.
Gerry’s engagement to Hackensacker is threatened when Tom reveals that Gerry is already married. With the help of her friends, Toto (Mary Astor) and The Major (William Demarest), Gerry is able to convince Hackensacker that her marriage to Tom is over. Hackensacker agrees to finance Tom’s business, and Gerry and Tom are reconciled.
The film culminates with a wild wedding party for Hackensacker and Gerry, where Tom and Gerry are married again. The film ends with Gerry and Tom embracing and Hackensacker and Toto dancing.
