Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Night of the Iguana”
The Night of the Iguana is a 1964 American drama film directed by John Huston and starring Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, and Sue Lyon.
The movie is set in a small Mexican hotel near the Pacific coast. It follows the story of Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon (Richard Burton), a defrocked Episcopal minister who has been reduced to leading tour groups for a small travel agency. Shannon is an alcoholic, suffering from a spiritual crisis, and his behavior has been increasingly inappropriate.
Shannon is accompanied on this tour by a group of women from a girls’ school in Mississippi – a group of young, impressionable women who are easily influenced by Shannon’s erratic behavior. Shannon is also joined by Maxine Faulk (Ava Gardner), a beautiful and mysterious woman who works at the hotel, and her lover, a young artist named Pablo (Paul Lukas).
The movie follows the drama that unfolds as Shannon struggles with his inner demons and the women of the tour group. As the night progresses, Shannon’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic and unpredictable, and Maxine and Pablo become increasingly concerned for his safety. Eventually, Shannon comes to terms with his own inner turmoil and finds a moment of peace and redemption.
The Night of the Iguana is a powerful drama about loss, redemption, and the power of faith. It is an intense psychological drama full of suspense, emotion, and complex characters.
