Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Namesake”
The Namesake is a 2006 drama film directed by Mira Nair and based on the novel of the same name by Jhumpa Lahiri. The film follows the story of the Ganguli family, who emigrate from Calcutta to New York City in the early 1970s.
The story begins with Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli, a young Bengali couple who have just moved to the United States. The couple is struggling to adjust to life in a new country, and to make matters worse, Ashima is pregnant. Despite their cultural differences, the couple is determined to make a life for themselves in America.
The film follows the Gangulis as they adjust to their new life in the United States. Ashoke and Ashima try to maintain their Bengali traditions while also assimilating to American culture. They also struggle to raise their children, Gogol and Sonia, in a way that honors both cultures.
Gogol grows up feeling out of place in both cultures, and he struggles to find his place in the world. As he grows older, he begins to rebel against his parents and their traditions. He changes his name to Nikhil, a name he believes will give him a sense of identity.
