Synopsis/Plot
The Name of the Rose is a 1986 mystery drama film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and based on the novel of the same name by Umberto Eco. Set in a 14th-century Italian monastery, the film follows Franciscan friar William of Baskerville (Sean Connery) and his novice Adso of Melk (Christian Slater) as they investigate a series of mysterious deaths in the abbey.
The film opens with William and Adso arriving at the abbey, where they are met with suspicion and hostility by the abbot. William is a renowned inquisitor who is tasked with investigating the deaths, which are thought to be linked to the abbey’s library. As William and Adso investigate, they uncover a secret book in the library that contains forbidden knowledge. Meanwhile, the abbot and his monks fear that William and Adso will uncover the truth about the library and its secrets.
The investigation leads William and Adso to a sinister plot involving a powerful monk, a blind librarian, and a secret sect of heretics. As the mystery unravels, William and Adso must battle the forces of evil in order to save themselves and the abbey.
