Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Mouse That Roared”
The Mouse That Roared is a 1959 American comedy film directed by Jack Arnold and based on Leonard Wibberley’s 1955 novel of the same name. The story follows the Grand Duchy of Fenwick, a small European nation, as its Prime Minister, Count Mountjoy, decides to declare war on the United States in order to receive economic aid from them after losing their only export, cheese.
The Prime Minister and his aides travel to the United States to declare war, but their small army is quickly taken captive. However, the Prime Minister’s niece, Tully Bascombe, who is travelling with them, manages to steal a nuclear weapon from the US military and smuggles it back to Fenwick.
With the nuclear weapon in their possession, the Grand Duchy of Fenwick threatens to launch a devastating attack on the United States unless they receive a large sum of money. The US government, desperate to avoid a nuclear war, agrees to the terms and sends a large sum of money to Fenwick.
The Prime Minister and his aides return to Fenwick, where they are hailed as national heroes. However, their victory is short-lived, as the US government soon discovers that the nuclear weapon was a fake. The US then sends an army to Fenwick to reclaim the money, and the Prime Minister and his aides must find a way to outwit the Americans and keep the money for their country.
