Synopsis/Plot
The Money Pit is a 1986 American comedy film directed by Richard Benjamin starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. The film follows the story of Walter Fielding (Hanks) and Anna Crowley (Long) as they try to renovate their newly purchased mansion, which they soon discover is a “money pit”. Walter and Anna are a young couple who are looking for their dream home. After seeing a beautiful mansion for sale in the newspaper, they decide to buy it, unaware that it is a dilapidated old house with numerous problems. Once they move in, they are faced with a never-ending list of repairs that need to be done. From a leaking roof to a broken boiler, the couple’s dream home quickly turns into a money pit. As they struggle to keep up with the endless repairs, they soon find themselves in over their heads. With the help of a handyman (Maury Chaykin) and a lawyer (Joseph Maher), they attempt to fix the house, but their efforts are in vain. In the end, they must face the reality that the house is a lost cause and they must move on. The Money Pit is a lighthearted comedy that offers a humorous look at the pitfalls of home ownership.
