Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Messenger”
The Messenger is an intense drama set during the Iraq War. It follows the story of Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery (Ben Foster), an Army Staff Sergeant who is assigned to the Casualty Notification service. He is sent to notify the families of fallen soldiers of their loved ones’ deaths.
At first, Will is cold and distant, but as he meets more families, he begins to understand the pain and suffering of the families he is tasked with notifying. He meets the parents of a fallen soldier, Olivia (Samantha Morton) and Carl (Steve Buscemi), and forms a strong bond with them.
Will also forms a relationship with a fellow soldier, Tony (Jena Malone), who is struggling with her own demons from the war. As Will and Tony’s relationship develops, Will is forced to confront his own inner demons and come to terms with his own experiences in the war.
Meanwhile, Will’s commanding officer, Captain Stone (Woody Harrelson), is determined to get Will to open up and talk about his experiences in Iraq. But Will is reluctant to do so and instead chooses to focus on his duty of notifying the families of fallen soldiers.
As Will continues to do his job, he slowly begins to come to terms with his own experiences and the pain of the families he notifies. He also begins to understand the importance of his job and how it helps the families of fallen soldiers cope with
