The film begins with Joan’s childhood, as she is seen to be a pious and strong-willed girl. Her father, Jacques d’Arc, is proud of her, but her mother, Isabelle, worries that her daughter’s religious devotion will lead to trouble. Joan’s visions of God become more frequent, and she begins to feel a calling to save France from the English.
