Synopsis/Plot
The Mauritanian is an inspiring and powerful legal drama based on the true story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi’s fight for freedom. Set in the early 2000s, the film follows Slahi’s journey as he is detained without charge at Guantanamo Bay for 14 years and the legal battle that ensues when he seeks justice.
The movie begins with Slahi’s arrest and detention at Guantanamo Bay in 2002. Slahi is a Mauritanian national who was living in Germany at the time of his arrest. He is accused of being a member of Al-Qaeda and having ties to the 9/11 attacks. Slahi is subjected to torture and solitary confinement during his detention, and is denied access to a lawyer.
In 2005, a US military defense lawyer, Nancy Hollander, takes on Slahi’s case. Hollander and her team fight for Slahi’s release from Guantanamo, despite the US government’s refusal to grant him the right to a fair trial. The film follows Hollander as she navigates the complex legal landscape and attempts to prove Slahi’s innocence.
