Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Masque of the Red Death”
The Masque of the Red Death is a 1964 horror film directed by Roger Corman and starring Vincent Price. The film is based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story of the same name.
The story follows the wealthy Prince Prospero (Vincent Price) and his entourage who retreat to a castle to escape a deadly plague known as the Red Death. Inside the castle, Prospero and his courtiers engage in a life of decadence and debauchery.
Meanwhile, outside the castle walls, the Red Death ravages the countryside, killing thousands of people. When Prospero learns that the Red Death has spread to his own castle, he orders a masquerade ball to be held in the castle’s great hall.
At the masquerade ball, Prospero’s guests arrive, each wearing a costume and a mask. As the night progresses, Prospero notices a mysterious figure in a red mask and costume, who does not speak and does not seem to be a guest.
Unbeknownst to Prospero, the figure is Death itself. As the night progresses, the figure kills Prospero’s guests one by one until only Prospero is left alive. In the end, Prospero realizes that no one can escape death and he dies in the arms of the Red Death.
