Synopsis/Plot
The Manchurian Candidate is a 1962 political thriller directed by John Frankenheimer and starring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, and Janet Leigh. The movie follows the story of a former Korean War veteran, Raymond Shaw, who is brainwashed by the Communists while in captivity. Upon returning home, Shaw is manipulated by his domineering mother into becoming a political pawn for a powerful political family.
The story begins in 1952 when Shaw and a group of American soldiers are captured by the Chinese during the Korean War. The soldiers are brainwashed by their captors, and Shaw is programmed to be a sleeper agent. When the soldiers return home, Shaw is awarded the Medal of Honor, but his fellow soldiers begin to experience strange nightmares.
When Shaw’s mother, a powerful political figure, learns of her son’s brainwashing, she conspires with her husband and a powerful senator to use Shaw as a pawn in their own political ambitions. Shaw is unknowingly manipulated into becoming a political candidate, and his mother uses her influence to ensure his success.
