Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Man Who Laughs”
The Man Who Laughs is a 1928 silent horror film directed by Paul Leni and starring Conrad Veidt, Mary Philbin and Olga Baclanova. It is based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo, which tells the story of a man named Gwynplaine who has been disfigured by a permanent grin.
The film opens in the 17th century England, where Gwynplaine (Conrad Veidt) is a young boy who is sold by his father to a band of traveling carnival performers. He is disfigured by a cruel nobleman, who orders his face to be carved into a permanent grin. Gwynplaine is adopted by the carnival performers and grows up as a clown, known as “The Laughing Man”.
Years later, Gwynplaine meets and falls in love with a blind woman named Dea (Mary Philbin). Despite his disfigurement, the two fall in love and eventually marry. However, their happiness is short-lived when Gwynplaine discovers that he is actually the long-lost son of a nobleman and heir to a large fortune.
Gwynplaine is forced to leave Dea behind and return to England to claim his inheritance. Upon his return, he finds himself embroiled in a political conspiracy and is once again disfigured, this time by a group of conspirators who wish to keep him from reclaiming his rightful inheritance.
