The story is set in the 1930s and follows the life of an orphaned Jewish girl named Suzie (Christina Ricci). Suzie is sent to England to live with her father, who she has never met. Once she arrives in England, she is sent to work in a dance troupe and meets a mysterious Gypsy man named Cesar (Johnny Depp).
Cesar tells Suzie of his past and of his love for a beautiful Gypsy woman named Lola (Cate Blanchett). Suzie is drawn to Cesar and soon discovers that Lola is her long-lost mother. Suzie must learn to accept her Gypsy heritage and find the courage to face her past and accept her mother.
The Man Who Cried is a story of identity, family, and self-acceptance. It is a story of love and loss, and of the power of forgiveness. As Suzie discovers the truth of her past, she learns to embrace her Gypsy heritage and finds the courage to accept her mother and to forgive her father.
