Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Man from Earth: Holocene”
The Man from Earth: Holocene is a 2017 science fiction drama film directed by Richard Schenkman and written by Jerome Bixby. The film stars David Lee Smith as John Oldman, the protagonist and last living member of an ancient species of human.
The movie follows John Oldman, who has been living in hiding for the last 14,000 years, as he attempts to keep his secret from a group of inquisitive scientists. After they discover his true identity, they begin to debate the implications of his immortality, while John is forced to confront the reality of his existence.
The story begins with John Oldman, a college professor, packing up his belongings and preparing to move away from his current home. He is soon visited by a group of colleagues, who are intrigued by his knowledge and eager to learn more about his past. After some initial reluctance, John reveals to them his true identity: he is a Cro-Magnon, a prehistoric human species that has been extinct for 14,000 years.
The group is initially skeptical, but John is able to demonstrate his knowledge of ancient languages and customs, as well as his physical features which are consistent with those of a Cro-Magnon.
The group is amazed and begins to debate the implications of John’s immortality. They also discuss the possibility of John’s influence on the future, and the potential for him to be a source of knowledge and wisdom.
