Synopsis/Plot

The Madness of King George is a 1994 British historical drama directed by Nicholas Hytner and starring Nigel Hawthorne, Helen Mirren, and Ian Holm. Set in the late 18th century, the film tells the story of King George III (Nigel Hawthorne), the longest-serving monarch in British history, and his descent into a mental illness known as porphyria. As the King’s mental health deteriorates, his advisors attempt to manipulate him for their own gain, while his son, the Prince of Wales (Rupert Everett), schemes to take the throne. Meanwhile, the King’s wife, Queen Charlotte (Helen Mirren), and his physician, Dr. Willis (Ian Holm), struggle to find a cure for his illness.

The Madness of King George is a compelling and touching drama that portrays the human side of a monarch’s illness and the political machinations that ensue. Hawthorne’s performance as the King is outstanding, as he navigates his character’s descent into madness with aplomb.
