Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Look of Silence”
The Look of Silence is a 2014 documentary film directed by Joshua Oppenheimer. It is a companion piece to his 2012 film The Act of Killing. The film follows Adi, an optometrist who seeks to confront the men who killed his brother during the 1965-66 Indonesian mass killings.
Adi, a 46-year-old optometrist, lives in a remote village in North Sumatra, Indonesia. He is the brother of Ramli, a victim of the 1965-66 Indonesian mass killings. Adi decides to confront the men responsible for his brother’s death, who are still living in his community. He visits them one by one, and through his conversations, Adi is able to gain a better understanding of the events that took place during the mass killings.
Adi’s conversations with the perpetrators of the mass killings are often difficult to watch, as they remain unrepentant and proud of their actions. Adi’s conversations with his family, however, provide a more intimate look at the impact of the mass killings. His elderly mother, for example, still mourns the loss of her son and struggles to come to terms with the past.
The Look of Silence is a powerful and heartbreaking documentary that provides an unflinching look at the 1965-66 Indonesian mass killings. Through Adi’s conversations with the perpetrators of the killings, the film sheds light on the human cost of the violence
