Synopsis/Plot
The Long, Hot Summer is a 1958 romantic drama directed by Martin Ritt and starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Orson Welles. The film follows the story of a restless young drifter, Ben Quick (Newman), who arrives in the small town of Frenchman’s Bend, Mississippi, and is immediately met with suspicion and hostility from the townsfolk. Ben quickly finds himself in the middle of a family feud between the wealthy and powerful Orin and Will Varner (Welles and Anthony Franciosa).
The Varner family is on the brink of financial ruin, and they see Ben as a way out. They offer him a job and a place to stay, hoping he can help them save the family business. Ben quickly finds himself in the middle of a love triangle between the Varner’s daughter, Clara (Woodward), and her former suitor, Alan Stewart (Lee Remick).
