Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner”
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is a 1962 British drama film directed by Tony Richardson, based on the short story of the same name by Alan Sillitoe. The film follows the story of Colin Smith, a rebellious working-class youth who is sent to a borstal (a youth detention center) for burgling a bakery.
At the borstal, Colin is introduced to the headmaster, Mr. Kemp, who is impressed by Colin’s running talent and encourages him to join the borstal’s cross-country running team. Colin is initially resistant to the idea, but eventually agrees.
As the borstal’s cross-country running team begins to compete in races, Colin’s talent is noticed by the headmaster and other staff. Colin is allowed to compete in races outside of the borstal, and his running talent begins to attract the attention of the press.
However, as Colin’s success continues to grow, so does his resentment towards the borstal and its staff. He begins to question why he should continue to run for the borstal, when he could be running for himself.
At the same time, Colin begins to develop a relationship with a young woman, Molly, who he meets at a local pub. Molly encourages Colin to stand up for himself and to take control of his own destiny.
