The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean is a 1972 western comedy-drama directed by John Huston and starring Paul Newman as the titular character.
The film follows the life of Judge Roy Bean, a self-appointed judge in the Wild West. The film opens with Bean in his early years, living in a small Texas town with his beloved saloon, the Jersey Lilly. He is a gambler and a drunk, but he has a heart of gold and is willing to help out the downtrodden.
One day, Bean discovers a young woman, Maria Elena, being held captive by a group of bandits. Bean rescues her and takes her in as his ward. As the two grow closer, Bean begins to develop strong feelings for Maria Elena.
Meanwhile, Bean is becoming increasingly feared and respected in the region. He is appointed as a judge by the governor and begins to dispense his own brand of justice. He quickly becomes known for his creative punishments and his disregard for the law.
The film follows Bean as he continues to dispense justice in the Wild West and as he struggles to keep his feelings for Maria Elena in check. Things get complicated when a powerful land baron, Frank Gass, arrives in town and begins to threaten Bean’s authority. Gass is determined to take control of the town and its resources, and Bean must fight to protect his home and his loved ones.
