Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Last Waltz”
The Last Waltz is a 1978 American documentary film directed by Martin Scorsese that documents the final concert of The Band, a Canadian-American rock group. The film follows the group as they prepare for the show, and features interviews with each of the group’s members as they reflect on their careers and the music they created.
The concert takes place at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, California, on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976. The Band, featuring Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel, is joined by a variety of guest musicians, including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Wood, and Paul Butterfield.
The film follows The Band from their rehearsals to the show itself, and includes performances of some of their best-known songs, including “The Weight,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Up on Cripple Creek” and “The Shape I’m In.” Interspersed with the performances are interviews with each member of The Band, as they reflect on their lives and careers.
The film culminates in the final performance of “The Last Waltz,” a song written specifically for the occasion. After the show, the group’s members go their separate ways, and the film ends with a montage of clips
