Synopsis/Plot
The Last Emperor is an epic biopic about the life of Pu Yi, the last emperor of China. The film follows the story of Pu Yi from his childhood in the Forbidden City, where he is chosen to become the emperor at the age of three, to his life as a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II.
The film begins with Pu Yi’s coronation, where he is surrounded by hundreds of servants and courtiers. He is taught the rituals and customs of the imperial court, and is given a strict education in Confucianism. Despite his sheltered life, Pu Yi is exposed to the outside world, and begins to question the rigid structure of the court.
As he grows older, Pu Yi is forced to abdicate the throne and is sent to live in a small house in the city. He begins to experience the outside world, and falls in love with a woman named Wan Jung. When the Japanese invade China, Pu Yi is taken prisoner and forced to work in a labor camp.
The film follows Pu Yi’s struggle to survive and his eventual return to Beijing. In Beijing, Pu Yi is reunited with Wan Jung and they marry. However, their happiness is short-lived as
