Synopsis/Plot
The Last Castle is a 2001 drama starring Robert Redford and James Gandolfini. It tells the story of a court-martialed general, played by Redford, who is sent to a military prison and must battle the warden, played by Gandolfini, for control of the inmates.
The film begins with General Irwin being court-martialed for disobeying orders during a battle in the Middle East. He is sentenced to a maximum security prison, where he is placed under the control of the warden, Colonel Winter. Winter runs the prison with an iron fist, and the inmates live in fear of his wrath.
General Irwin quickly finds himself at odds with the warden and his oppressive regime. He begins to rally the inmates and encourages them to fight back against the warden’s oppressive rule. He also begins to build a castle out of scrap metal and other materials, which the inmates use as a symbol of hope and freedom.
As the conflict between the warden and the inmates grows, General Irwin’s castle serves as a refuge for the inmates and a symbol of hope. In the end, the inmates are able to overthrow the warden and gain their freedom.
