Synopsis/Plot

The King’s Speech is a 2010 historical drama film directed by Tom Hooper and starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham Carter. The film follows the story of King George VI of the United Kingdom, who, after the death of his father, King George V, struggles to overcome his stammering and find his voice as a leader of his country during the early days of World War II.

The film opens in 1925, as Prince Albert, Duke of York (Firth), is preparing to give a speech to the British Empire Exhibition. Despite his best efforts, Albert is unable to deliver his speech due to a debilitating stammer. His wife, Elizabeth (Bonham Carter), is concerned and enlist the help of an unconventional speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Rush). Through a series of unorthodox techniques, Lionel helps Albert to slowly but surely overcome his stammer and gain confidence in his public speaking.

As the years pass, Albert becomes King George VI and is forced to face the challenge of leading his country through the turbulent times of World War II. With Lionel’s help, George is able to deliver powerful speeches to the nation and gain the respect of his people.
