Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Keeping Room”
The Keeping Room is a 2014 American western drama film set during the final days of the American Civil War. It follows three Southern women – Augusta, Louise, and Mad, who are struggling to survive in the aftermath of the war.
Augusta, the eldest of the three, is a young widow who has been left to care for her teenage sister Louise and their elderly slave Mad. With no men left to protect them from the lawless bands of marauding soldiers, the three women must rely on each other to survive.
One day, two Union soldiers come to the women’s home looking for food and shelter. Augusta and Louise are initially scared, but soon realize that the soldiers are actually trying to help. The soldiers warn the women of the danger posed by a group of Confederate deserters and advise them to stay inside until they leave.
Unfortunately, the deserters soon arrive and the women are forced to defend themselves. With no other option, Augusta and Louise arm themselves with guns and fight off the deserters. Mad, who has been teaching them how to shoot, eventually joins in the fight.
The three women eventually manage to drive the deserters away, but not without tremendous loss. As the war finally comes to an end, Augusta, Louise, and Mad must now face the harsh reality of what the future holds for them. Will they be able to survive in a world that no longer needs them?
