Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Jerk”
The Jerk is a 1979 American comedy film written and directed by Carl Reiner and starring Steve Martin.
The movie follows the story of Navin Johnson (Steve Martin), an adopted white son of a poor black sharecropper family. Navin is an innocent, naive young man who is unaware of his background and is desperate to find his purpose in life.
Navin is sent off to make something of himself and he leaves his family behind in Mississippi. He soon finds himself in St. Louis, where he gets a job as a gas station attendant. After a few days, he meets Marie (Bernadette Peters), a beautiful woman who works as a waitress at a local diner. The two quickly fall in love and Navin moves in with her.
Meanwhile, Navin’s luck begins to change when he discovers that he has an incredible talent for inventing things. With the help of a local inventor, Navin creates a series of inventions, including a self-stirring pot and a device that can make a phone call without a dial tone.
Navin’s inventions bring him fame and fortune, but he soon discovers that his newfound wealth has also attracted the attention of a greedy con man (Jackie Mason). The con man tries to swindle Navin out of his money, but Navin is too smart for him.
