Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Inspector General”
The Inspector General is a 1949 American musical comedy film directed by Henry Koster and starring Danny Kaye. The film is based on Nikolai Gogol’s play of the same name, and features music by Sylvia Fine and Johnny Green.
The story takes place in a small, impoverished town in the Ukraine in the mid-1800s. The town is run by an inept mayor and his corrupt and cruel henchmen, who extort and oppress the townspeople. When a mysterious stranger, the Inspector General, arrives in town, the mayor and his cronies believe he is a government official sent to investigate them.
In order to protect themselves, the mayor and his henchmen plot to bribe the Inspector General with money and gifts. However, unbeknownst to them, the Inspector General is actually a poor, simple-minded vagabond who was hired by the townspeople to pose as an inspector in order to expose the mayor and his cronies.
As the story progresses, the Inspector General proves to be more than a match for the mayor and his cronies. He outwits them at every turn, and in the end, exposes their corruption and brings justice to the townspeople. Along the way, he also falls in love with a beautiful local woman, and the two are married at the end of the film.
The Inspector General is a lighthearted comedy about a poor but clever vagabond who
