Synopsis/Plot
The Insider is a 1999 American drama film directed by Michael Mann and starring Al Pacino, Russell Crowe, Christopher Plummer, and Diane Venora. The film is based on the true story of Jeffrey Wigand, a former executive at the tobacco giant Brown & Williamson, who became a whistleblower in the mid-1990s. The film depicts Wigand’s battle with the tobacco industry, the legal system, and the media, as he attempts to expose the truth about the health risks of smoking.
The film begins with Wigand (Crowe) being interviewed by Lowell Bergman (Pacino), a 60 Minutes producer. Wigand is reluctant to speak out about the tobacco industry, but Bergman is determined to get his story. After much persuasion, Wigand agrees to be interviewed on camera, but his revelations about the industry’s practices are met with skepticism and even hostility.
Meanwhile, the tobacco company is determined to keep Wigand quiet and takes legal action to prevent him from speaking out. Despite the threats and harassment, Wigand continues his fight and eventually his story is made public.
