Jack is in love with Algernon’s cousin, Gwendolen Fairfax, and has come to London to propose to her. However, before he can do so, he must first explain his mysterious past. Jack has invented a brother named Ernest, in order to escape the dullness of his country life. This has caused complications as Gwendolen is in love with a man named Ernest, and will not consider Jack as a suitor unless he is Ernest too.
Meanwhile, Algernon has also invented an imaginary friend, Bunbury, in order to escape the tedium of London life. Algernon visits Jack’s country estate and meets Jack’s ward, Cecily Cardew, whom he falls in love with.
Jack and Algernon’s deception is eventually revealed, but the ladies are still in love with them. Jack and Gwendolen are married, and Algernon and Cecily are engaged. Jack and Algernon must
