Synopsis/Plot
The Imitation Game is a 2014 biographical drama film directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Graham Moore, based on the biography Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, a British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist who was instrumental in cracking Nazi Germany’s Enigma code during World War II, which helped the Allies win the war.
The film follows Turing as he leads a team of code-breakers at Britain’s top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park. Along the way, Turing must confront the personal demons of his past, including his homosexuality, which was illegal in Britain at the time. As theteam works to crack the code, Turing struggles against the institutional and personal forces that threaten to destroy him. The film also explores Turing’s relationship with his colleagues, including his close friend and fellow code-breaker Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley). The Imitation Game received critical acclaim and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, making it the first film to win an Oscar for a screenplay based on a true story.
