The movie is set in the small French village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, where the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), has recently opened an Indian restaurant, Maison Mumbai, just 100 feet away from a renowned French restaurant, Le Saule Pleureur, owned by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). Despite their initial rivalry, the two restaurants eventually form a bond when Hassan (Manish Dayal), the son of the Kadam family, begins to work with Madame Mallory in the kitchen.
Hassan and Mallory form an unlikely friendship as they learn from each other and share their cultures. As Hassan learns the intricacies of French cuisine, he also begins to fall in love with Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), the sous-chef of Le Saule Pleureur.
