Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Humbling”
The Humbling is a dark comedy-drama about an aging actor, Simon Axler (Al Pacino), who has lost his passion for performing and is suffering from a mental breakdown. He checks himself into a psychiatric facility for treatment, but his stay there does little to help his condition.
Desperate for a change of scenery, Simon decides to take a break from the city and stay at the country home of his close friend, Pegeen (Greta Gerwig). As the two spend time together, a romantic relationship begins to develop between them.
Meanwhile, Simon’s daughter, Stephanie (Kathryn Erbe), is struggling with her own issues. She has recently broken up with her girlfriend, and she is trying to find her place in the world. She visits Simon at Pegeen’s home, and the two have an awkward reunion.
Simon’s mental health continues to deteriorate, and he becomes increasingly dependent on Pegeen. He also begins to experience hallucinations, which Pegeen believes are a sign of his deteriorating mental state. As his mental state gets worse, Simon begins to doubt his own identity and his ability to act.
Eventually, Simon’s mental health reaches a breaking point, and he decides to take his own life. Pegeen, however, is determined to help him and convinces him to seek professional help. With her help, Simon eventually begins to recover and the two of them find a way
