Synopsis/Plot
The Hours is a 2002 drama film directed by Stephen Daldry and starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and Julianne Moore. It is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Cunningham and tells the story of three women from different eras whose lives are interconnected by Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway.
The film follows the lives of three women in three different time periods. In 1923, Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) is struggling with her mental health and trying to write her novel Mrs. Dalloway. In 1951, Laura Brown (Julianne Moore) is a young housewife in Los Angeles who is struggling with her own mental health and trying to make sense of her life. In 2001, Clarissa Vaughan (Meryl Streep) is a New Yorker who is preparing a party for her longtime friend, a poet dying from AIDS.
The film explores themes of love, loss, and identity as each of the characters struggles to find meaning in their lives. Virginia, Laura, and Clarissa all share a common bond of loneliness and a need for connection. As the film progresses, these connections become clearer as the characters learn to accept themselves and their circumstances.
