Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Hotel New Hampshire”
The Hotel New Hampshire is a 1984 comedy-drama film directed by Tony Richardson and based on the 1981 novel of the same name by John Irving. The film follows the eccentric Berry family, who buy a run-down hotel in New Hampshire and attempt to turn it into a successful business.
The story begins with the death of the family patriarch, Win Berry, who leaves his four children, Franny, John, Lilly, and Egg, a set of instructions to buy a hotel in New Hampshire. The children are accompanied by their mother, Mary, and their stepfather, Frank, who is a former professional football player.
Once they arrive in New Hampshire, the family finds the hotel in a state of disrepair and begins to renovate it. They work hard to make the hotel a success, but their efforts are hampered by a series of strange occurrences, including a series of mysterious fires, a serial killer on the loose, and a mysterious stranger who shows up at the hotel and claims to be a long-lost family member.
The family’s struggles are further complicated by their own eccentricities, including Franny’s obsession with a bear named Freud, John’s relationship with a mysterious woman named Susie, and Lilly’s relationship with a local boy named Egg.
As the family continues to make progress on the hotel, they find themselves coming closer together and learning valuable lessons about life, love, and family. In the end, the family learns that
