Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Hoax”
The Hoax is a 2006 American drama film starring Richard Gere, Alfred Molina, Marcia Gay Harden, and Hope Davis. Directed by Lasse Hallström, the story follows Clifford Irving (Gere), a struggling writer who decides to perpetrate a hoax by claiming to be the authorized biographer of reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes (Molina).
The film begins with Clifford Irving writing a book about his experiences in Ibiza, Spain. He is approached by his old friend and publisher, Andrea Tate (Davis), who offers him a book deal. Clifford is desperate for money, so he comes up with an idea to fabricate a biography of Howard Hughes. He enlists the help of his friend and research assistant, Richard Suskind (Molina), and the two begin to create a life story for Hughes.
Clifford and Richard write a manuscript and submit it to Andrea, who is initially skeptical of the project. After some convincing, she agrees to publish the book. Clifford and Richard then embark on a media tour to promote the book, and Clifford soon finds himself in the spotlight. He is interviewed by prominent news outlets and even appears on the popular television show, The Dick Cavett Show.
The hoax begins to unravel when Clifford and Richard are confronted by a Hughes representative, who claims that Hughes never authorized the book. Clifford and Richard are arrested and charged with fraud. Clifford is sentenced to prison, while Richard is given probation.
