Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Hero”
The Hero is a 2017 American drama film written and directed by Brett Haley. The movie follows Lee Hayden (Sam Elliott), a aging western movie star who is struggling to find his place in a world that has moved on from him. Lee is forced to confront his own mortality and the choices he has made in life, as he discovers he has an incurable illness.
The movie begins with Lee Hayden living a lonely life in his home in Los Angeles. He is a former western movie star and has been living off of his past fame for years. He spends his days smoking marijuana and reminiscing about his past. He is content with his life until he receives a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
Lee is forced to confront his mortality and the choices he has made in life. He reconnects with his estranged daughter Lucy (Krysten Ritter) and forms a relationship with a stand-up comedian, Charlotte (Laura Prepon). As he starts to come to terms with his diagnosis, he discovers that he can still find joy in life and in the relationships he has.
The movie follows Lee as he reconciles with his past and finds a way to make peace with his life. He meets with old friends and co-stars, including Jack (Nick Offerman), and takes on a new role in a western movie. He also finds himself in the middle of a media storm when he goes on a talk show and speaks candidly about his illness.
