Synopsis/Plot
The Harder They Fall is a 1956 American sports drama film directed by Mark Robson and starring Humphrey Bogart in his final film role. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Budd Schulberg and follows the story of a down-on-his-luck sports writer, Eddie Willis (Bogart), who is hired by a shady boxing promoter, Nick Benko (Rod Steiger), to help promote a young, unknown boxer from Argentina, Toro Moreno (Mike Lane).
Eddie soon discovers that Toro is being set up to take a dive in his first fight and reluctantly agrees to help him. As Toro’s career progresses, Eddie is forced to confront his conscience and must choose between doingwhat is right and what is best for his own career. As Toro’s career spirals downward, Eddie realizes the truth behind Benko’s scheme and must decide whether to stand by Toro and risk his own career or to remain loyal to Benko and keep his job. Ultimately, Eddie chooses to stand by Toro, and the two men work together to expose Benko’s corruption. The film’s climax features a dramatic fight between Toro and his opponent, with Eddie and Toro ultimately emerging victorious. The film ends with Eddie and Toro walking away together, having won their fight against the corrupt system.
