Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Happy Prince”
The Happy Prince is a 2018 biographical drama film directed by Rupert Everett. It tells the story of the last days of Oscar Wilde, a brilliant playwright and poet who was exiled from England and died in poverty in Paris.
The film opens in 1895, when Wilde is released from prison after serving a two-year sentence for “gross indecency”. He is a broken man, having lost his reputation, his family, and his health. He moves to Paris and is taken in by a former lover, Reggie Turner.
Wilde begins to write again, and his works are well-received by the public. He also begins a relationship with a young poet, Alfred Douglas, who is the son of the Marquess of Queensberry, the man who instigated Wilde’s trial.
Despite his newfound success, Wilde still feels the sting of his exile and loneliness. He is haunted by memories of his past and his failed relationships. He is also struggling with his health, as his syphilis has taken a toll on him.
Meanwhile, Wilde is approached by a young boy, Robbie Ross, who is a fan of Wilde’s work. The two become friends, and Wilde begins to teach Robbie about life and literature.
As Wilde’s health deteriorates, he begins to reflect on his life and his legacy. He decides to write one last work, The Happy Prince, which is a story about a statue of a prince who gives away his wealth to
