The Great Escape is a classic 1963 World War II movie directed by John Sturges and starring Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn and David McCallum. The movie is based on the true story of a group of Allied prisoners of war who escape from a German prison camp during World War II.
The story follows the prisoners as they plan and execute an elaborate escape from the camp, Stalag Luft III. The prisoners, led by Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett (Richard Attenborough), are determined to break out of the camp despite the seemingly impossible odds. The prisoners must use ingenuity, courage and team work to create a plan to escape the camp.
The plan involves digging three tunnels (nicknamed Tom, Dick and Harry) out of the camp, which is heavily guarded by the Germans. The prisoners must also create a variety of disguises and tools to help them in their escape. The prisoners must also battle the elements, as their escape is hampered by the harsh winter conditions.
The movie follows the prisoners as they make their daring escape attempt, and the harrowing events that follow. The prisoners must evade the German soldiers
