The Graduate is a 1967 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Mike Nichols and written by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham, based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Charles Webb. It tells the story of 21-year-old Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), a recent college graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), and then falls in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross).
The film was acclaimed, and was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Hoffman), Best Director (Nichols), and Best Adapted Screenplay. It won the Academy Award for Best Director and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Written American Comedy. The film was also a commercial success, grossing over $104 million worldwide in its initial theatrical release.
The Graduate follows Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate who is adrift and unsure of his future. He is taken under the wing of the older Mrs. Robinson, who seduces him into a sexual relationship. However, Benjamin soon finds himself in love with the Robinsons’ daughter, Elaine.
