Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Front”
The Front is a 1976 American comedy-drama film directed by Martin Ritt and starring Woody Allen, Zero Mostel, and Herschel Bernardi. The film tells the story of a timid, put-upon New York bookkeeper who finds himself in the midst of a blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter’s battle with the House Un-American Activities Committee.
The film opens with a young Woody Allen playing the role of Howard Prince, a mild-mannered bookkeeper who is struggling to make ends meet. He is approached by his friend, the blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Alfred Miller (Zero Mostel), who needs someone to front for him in order to get his scripts sold. Howard reluctantly agrees, and soon finds himself in the midst of a heated battle with the House Un-American Activities Committee.
Howard’s involvement with the HUAC brings him into contact with powerful Hollywood figures, including the head of the studio, Michael Jaffe (Herschel Bernardi). Jaffe is determined to get Miller to testify before the HUAC, but Howard is determined to protect his friend at all costs. As the tension mounts, Howard must choose between protecting his friend and his own career.
The Front is a powerful and poignant drama that examines the consequences of McCarthyism and the struggle between artistic freedom and political pressure. With its sharp wit and sharp observations, the film is an insightful look at a period of American history that has been all but forgotten.
