Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Front Page”
The Front Page is a 1974 American comedy-drama film directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
The film follows the story of two Chicago newspaper reporters, Hildy Johnson (Lemmon) and Walter Burns (Matthau), who are trying to get an exclusive scoop on the upcoming execution of Earl Williams (Austin Pendleton).
Hildy is planning to quit the newspaper business and marry Peggy Grant (Susan Sarandon). But Walter, his former editor, won’t let him go without a fight. He concocts a plan to get Hildy to cover the Williams story, hoping to keep him on the job.
Meanwhile, the corrupt Mayor (Charles Durning) and his cronies are trying to keep the story from getting out. They go to extreme lengths to keep Williams’ execution a secret, and they even try to bribe Hildy and Walter.
As the story unfolds, Hildy and Walter have to find a way to get the scoop and keep it from the mayor and his cronies. In the end, Hildy and Walter succeed and Williams is granted a stay of execution.
