Synopsis/Plot
The French Connection is an Academy Award-winning crime drama released in 1971. Directed by William Friedkin and written by Ernest Tidyman, the film stars Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider as two New York City detectives on the hunt for a major drug smuggling ring.
The story follows Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle (Hackman) and Buddy “Cloudy” Russo (Scheider), two NYPD detectives investigating a heroin smuggling ring operating out of France. The two detectives are determined to take down the drug kingpin, Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey), and his partner, Henri Devereaux (Marcel Bozzuffi).
The movie follows the two detectives as they track down leads, infiltrate the underworld, and face off against the criminals. Along the way, they must contend with a corrupt police department and a system that is more interested in protecting its own interests than in justice.
The French Connection is a gritty and realistic look at the world of drug smuggling and organized crime. It features intense action sequences, including a famous car chase through the streets of New York City. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
