Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Five Heartbeats”
The Five Heartbeats is a 1991 musical drama film directed by Robert Townsend. It follows the story of five young African-American men from the inner city of Chicago who form a singing group in the 1960s and go on to become a successful Motown-style act.
The movie begins with a young Donald “Duck” Matthews (Robert Townsend) and his friends, Eddie King (Michael Wright), J.T. Matthews (Leon Robinson), Anthony “Choirboy” Stone (Harry J. Lennix), and Jimmy “Thunder” Early (Tico Wells) forming a singing group in their basement. They call themselves The Five Heartbeats and their friendship and music quickly become their passion.
The group is soon discovered by a record producer, Jack Kane (John Candy), who takes them on a tour of the country. As they gain more fame and success, they must also learn to deal with the pressures of fame, such as the temptations of drugs, women, and the music industry’s shady dealings.
The group’s success continues to grow, but their friendship begins to suffer as they struggle with their egos and personal issues. Duck, the leader of the group, finds himself in a downward spiral as he struggles with his own inner demons. Eventually, the group breaks up and the members go their separate ways.
