Synopsis/Plot
The English Patient is an Academy Award-winning romantic drama directed by Anthony Minghella and based on the novel of the same name by Michael Ondaatje. Set during World War II, the film follows the story of a mysterious, badly burned patient in an Italian villa, who is pieced together through flashbacks as the story unfolds.
The film begins with a Canadian nurse, Hana (Juliette Binoche), caring for the English patient (Ralph Fiennes) in an abandoned Italian villa. He is a mysterious figure, his face disfigured and his identity unknown. Hana is caring for him out of a sense of duty, and the patient is slowly regaining his strength. As his memories return, he recalls his past life and his relationship with his lover, Katharine (Kristin Scott Thomas).
The patient, a Hungarian cartographer named Almásy, had a passionate affair with Katharine while mapping the Sahara desert for the Royal Geographical Society. But their love was doomed when the war broke out and Almásy became a spy for the Nazis. When Katharine discovers his true identity, she leaves him and joins the Allied forces.
Meanwhile, Hana befriends
