Synopsis/Plot
The Empire Strikes Back is the second installment in the original Star Wars trilogy and was released in 1980. It is set three years after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, and follows the continuing struggle between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire.
The movie begins with the Empire attacking the Rebel base on the remote ice planet of Hoth. The Rebels are able to escape, but Darth Vader, the leader of the Empire, is determined to find them. As the Rebels flee, Luke Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, decides to leave and seek out the wise Jedi master Yoda on the planet Dagobah. Meanwhile, Han Solo and Princess Leia attempt to escape from the Empire in the Millennium Falcon, but they are eventually capturedby Darth Vader and taken to the Cloud City of Bespin. Vader makes a deal with Han’s old friend Lando Calrissian, the administrator of Cloud City, to use Han and Leia as bait in a trap for Luke. Luke eventually arrives on Cloud City and is nearly killed by Vader in a lightsaber duel. However, at the last minute, Luke is able to escape with the help of his friends.
The movie ends with the Empire in pursuit of the Rebels, but the Rebels remain undaunted and determined to fight against the Empire. The movie also introduces the audience to the mysterious figure of Boba Fett, a bounty hunter hired by the Empire to track down the Rebels. With the Empire in pursuit, the stage is set for the next installment in the trilogy, Return of the Jedi.
