Synopsis/Plot
The Electrical Life of Louis Wain is a 2019 British biographical drama film directed by Will Sharpe. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Louis Wain, an artist whose career and mental health decline as he struggles with schizophrenia.
Louis Wain is a talented artist living in Victorian London, where he is best known for his illustrations of cats. His whimsical, colorful drawings of cats capture the imagination of the public and quickly make him famous. His success leads to his marriage to Emily Richardson, a young woman who supports his work and encourages him to pursue his art.
However, Louis soon begins to experience strange visions and hallucinations, which lead to a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Despite his illness, Louis continues to create art, but his work becomes increasingly abstract and distorted. As his mental health deteriorates, Louis begins to lose touch with reality and is institutionalized.
The film follows Louis’ journey through his illness and explores the power of art to transcend mental illness. It also examines the effects of his illness on those around him, including Emily, who is forced to confront her own feelings of guilt and helplessness as she watches her husband’s decline.
