Over the years, their rivalry intensifies as they engage in a series of increasingly violent duels.
The film begins with the two men, d’Hubert and Feraud, fighting a duel with swords. D’Hubert is victorious and Feraud is wounded. Feraud refuses to accept defeat and demands a rematch, which d’Hubert refuses.
Several years later, d’Hubert and Feraud are both officers in Napoleon’s army and they meet again during the Battle of Marengo. Feraud is determined to get his revenge on d’Hubert and challenges him to another duel. D’Hubert is initially reluctant, but eventually agrees.
The two men meet in a forest and fight a fierce duel. D’Hubert is again victorious and Feraud is wounded. Feraud is determined to get his revenge and challenges d’Hubert to yet another duel.
