Synopsis/Plot
The Dig is a 2021 historical drama film directed by Simon Stone and starring Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn, and Ben Chaplin. The film follows the story of Edith Pretty (Mulligan), an English widow who hires a local self-taught archaeologist, Basil Brown (Fiennes), to excavate the mysterious burial mounds on her property. As the two discover the secrets of the ancient ship buried beneath the grounds, they become increasingly intrigued by the artifacts and their potential connection to the past.
The Dig is set in the English countryside in 1939, as the country is on the brink of war. Edith is a wealthy widow who lives in a sprawling estate with her young son, Robert (Archie Barnes). When she begins to experience strange visions and dreams, Edith decides to hire Basil, a local self-taught archaeologist, to investigate the mounds on her property.
